Latin American Stakeholders Reach Broad Consensus on Advancing Sinology

LIMA, Peru, Sept. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- This is a news report from iQingdao:

Sinology and China studies in Latin America will play an increasingly important academic role

The 3rd Congress of Latin American Sinologists was successfully held in Lima, the capital of Peru, from September 15 to 17, 2026, local time. Representatives from academic, educational, diplomatic, think-tank and business communities in more than 10 Latin American countries, including Peru, Mexico, Chile and Argentina, gathered for in-depth discussions under the theme "From Dialogue to Convergence: Institutionalization, Connectivity, and Common Horizons between Latin America and China." The congress forged broad consensus among Latin American stakeholders on advancing Sinology and China studies. It officially launched the Latin American Sinology Think Tank (LACT), announced the establishment of the Latin American Young Sinologists Academic Alliance, and confirmed that the fourth congress will be held in Mexico City.

An exhibition of Qingdao's intangible cultural heritage and creative products was held during the congress, highlighting the integration of traditional ICH techniques with contemporary creative design. It featured a carefully selected range of Qingdao products, including traditional handicrafts, folk-culture-inspired creations and contemporary design products. The exhibits combined the legacy of traditional culture with contemporary creativity and aesthetics. The exhibition attracted many Latin American participants, who stopped to view the works and exchange ideas. The distinctive ICH creations and cultural elements reflecting Qingdao's mountain-and-sea character gave international guests a direct sense of the appeal of fine traditional Chinese culture and the vitality of Qingdao's local culture.

The congress provided a systematic review of the growing interest in China studies across Latin America in recent years and marked a milestone in the region's transition from fragmented exploration to coordinated development in Sinology. As the consensus reached at the congress is translated into action, dedicated platforms begin operating and regional networks continue to expand, Sinology and China studies in Latin America will play an increasingly important academic role in promoting mutual learning between Chinese and Latin American civilizations and supporting shared development across the Global South.
