On the morning of September 9, market chatter suddenly emerged that Alibaba would officially announce the launch of a new group-buying product and review system within the next two days, directly targeting Meituan’s core business.

In addition, Barclays raised its price target on Alibaba shares to $190 from $145, and maintained its overweight rating.

US-listed shares of Alibaba jumped 4.3% in morning trading on Tuesday.

According to sources, a major business press conference is indeed scheduled to take place at Alibaba’s Xixi Campus Area C in Hangzhou on Wednesday, September 10, lasting for half a day in the morning. However, Alibaba has not confirmed whether the event will be related to the group-buying business.

Meanwhile, according to a report by Sina Technology, Alibaba is set to officially announce a major business restructuring on September 10, which will include the relaunch of Koubei and its integration with AutoNavi’s group-buying services.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the restructuring marks a significant move in the local lifestyle services sector. The initiative involves reviving Koubei and enabling AutoNavi (Gaode) to roll out its own group-buying business, with the aim of rebuilding a local consumption decision-making ecosystem to compete directly with industry leader Meituan-Dianping.

Koubei, a long-standing part of Alibaba’s local services portfolio, has drawn considerable attention with this latest revival. It will be the platform’s third major relaunch since its acquisition in 2008. Originally founded in 2004, Koubei was acquired by Alibaba in 2008 and has since been shuffled across different business units including Yahoo China, Taobao, Alipay, Ele.me, and AutoNavi. Over the years, the platform has experienced multiple pauses and relaunches. This time, Koubei plans to build an independent review system leveraging product capabilities, while integrating merchant orders and consumer feedback data from Ele.me, AutoNavi, and Alipay, in an effort to create a new consumption evaluation framework positioned directly against Meituan-Dianping.

At the same time, AutoNavi is expected to play a pivotal role in this restructuring. The mapping service is preparing to launch a self-operated group-buying business and is currently ramping up its product capabilities in this area.
