U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.86%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.86%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.08%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON), which rose 3.87% or 8.71 points to trade at 233.91 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 1.22% or 5.12 points to end at 423.13 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 1.02% or 2.11 points to 208.91 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which lost 7.14% or 22.97 points to trade at 298.84 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.47% or 0.87 points to end at 24.18 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 2.66% or 1.23 points to 45.04.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which rose 6.55% to 62.66, DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was up 5.73% to settle at 74.34 and Live Nation Entertainment Inc (NYSE:LYV) which gained 4.77% to close at 129.70.

The worst performers were The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 7.78% to 25.85 in late trade, GE Vernova LLC (NYSE:GEV) which lost 7.36% to settle at 323.71 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which was down 7.14% to 298.84 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Shineco Inc (NASDAQ:SISI) which rose 2,517.39% to 3.01, BTC Digital Ltd (NASDAQ:BTCT) which was up 316.67% to settle at 10.50 and Nano Labs Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NA) which gained 134.04% to close at 7.70.

The worst performers were Atlantic Coastal Acquisition Corp II (NASDAQ:ACAB) which was down 47.06% to 5.77 in late trade, Neurogene Inc (NASDAQ:NGNE) which lost 44.08% to settle at 40.00 and Rockwell Medical Inc (NASDAQ:RMTI) which was down 39.14% to 2.83 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2200 to 627 and 49 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2226 fell and 1072 advanced, while 118 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.74% to 14.71 a new 1-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.50% or 13.10 to $2,604.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.06% or 0.04 to hit $68.00 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.11% or 0.08 to trade at $71.75 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.27% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.59% to 154.62.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 105.85.
