Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.84%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, IT and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.84% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX), which rose 10.90% or 0.79 points to trade at 8.04 at the close. CES Energy Solutions Corp (TSX:CEU) added 10.66% or 0.90 points to end at 9.40 and SilverCrest Metals Inc (TSX:SIL) was up 10.69% or 1.39 points to 14.39 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Superior Plus Corp (TSX:SPB), which lost 16.89% or 1.14 points to trade at 5.61 in late trade. SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM) declined 13.27% or 1.14 points to end at 7.42 and Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) shed 5.78% or 6.14 points to 100.00.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 549 to 343 and 115 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 7.44% to 11.20.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.46% or 39.20 to $2,715.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.63% or 0.45 to hit $72.14 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.75% or 0.56 to trade at $75.48 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.63% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.04% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.72% at 104.23.
