Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.17%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the IT, Real Estate and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.17%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which rose 5.64% or 0.19 points to trade at 3.56 at the close. Transcontinental Inc (TSX:TCLa) added 4.66% or 0.80 points to end at 17.97 and Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ) was up 3.76% or 1.84 points to 50.83 in late trade.

Biggest losers included SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM), which lost 4.71% or 0.38 points to trade at 7.68 in late trade. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:AG) declined 4.69% or 0.40 points to end at 8.12 and Magna International Inc (TSX:MG) shed 3.93% or 2.27 points to 55.48.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 573 to 355 and 90 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.21% to 11.08.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.51% or 13.60 to $2,654.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.23% or 0.16 to hit $68.34 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.49% or 0.35 to trade at $71.89 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.11% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.09% to 0.66.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.39% at 100.50.
