Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.90%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Discretionary, Clean Technology and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.90%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Dollarama Inc (TSX:DOL), which rose 8.18% or 10.25 points to trade at 135.53 at the close. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:AG) added 7.50% or 0.49 points to end at 7.02 and Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX:EFR) was up 7.48% or 0.46 points to 6.61 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Parex Resources Inc (TSX:PXT), which lost 6.08% or 0.78 points to trade at 12.05 in late trade. International Petroleum Corp (TSX:IPCO) declined 2.24% or 0.38 points to end at 16.55 and Mattr Corp (TSX:MATR) shed 1.99% or 0.29 points to 14.30.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 540 to 379 and 99 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 16.12% to 10.77.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.04% or 0.90 to $2,542.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 2.33% or 1.53 to hit $67.28 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.07% or 1.43 to trade at $70.62 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.29% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.33% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 101.69.
